Nehemiah

3. The Preparation

Of all the options one has for opening an important new book of the Bible, why start by telling us the month and year when it occurred? At first, it seems quite boring. As a reminder, here’s the very first verse of Nehemiah chapter 1: “It came to pass in the month of Chislev, in the twentieth year…” Nehemiah 1:1a Sorry, but at first, I’m surprised and frankly a bit annoyed at this trivia. Where’s the political intrigue? Tell me about the plots against Nehemiah’s life! How does he negotiate for supplies with the king?

2. The Prayer

From its opening moments, set in the Persian palace fifteen centuries ago, the story of Nehemiah immerses us in a tragic tale. The visitors from Judah finish their report by describing the terrible conditions in Jerusalem:

Nehemiah

1. The Background

Roughly 2,500 years ago, a Jewish exile named Nehemiah, working in a Persian palace, received several visitors from his homeland of Judah. Although that country had been ransacked decades earlier, the Lord allowed a few thousand Jews to remain. In the first chapter of this story, these visitors described to Nehemiah the relentless, miserable living conditions of those still living in Jerusalem. Let’s listen to their heartbreaking report — shown in the first three verses:

Introduction

Although it is well-known for providing remarkable wisdom, the Bible also contains fascinating reports of courageous leadership and political intrigue.  One of those accounts originates in the mysterious, ancient land of Persia and the ruins of Jerusalem.  The story describes a very brave, devoted man named Nehemiah. This Bible hero was mighty in spirit; he acted shrewdly toward those who tried to undermine his work, take his life and degrade his reputation.  The special mission he undertook, the one that gave him a good name throughout history, lasted only 52 days.

Adam’s Five Assignments

The second chapter of Genesis describes how the Lord designed Adam and gave him five strategic assignments — all before Eve was even created. These conditions apply to men even today, in modern times. This instructive passage reads:

Preparing for the Family “Business”

Early in the Gospel of Luke we find a familiar story where Mary and Joseph are frantically searching in Jerusalem for three days, looking for their 12-year-old son Jesus. Finally finding Him in the Temple, speaking with the elders, the boy asks his parents, “Why did you seek Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?” These are His first recorded words, and they reveal an early awareness of His divine assignment. It speaks to His identity as the Son of God.

Now and Then, Here and There, This and That

Mankind has an insatiable hunger for discovery. We delight in scientific and technological advances. The microchip has democratized access to information in the last few decades, ushering in a knowledge revolution unseen since Gutenberg’s printing press in the 1430s. Concepts may now be conceived, tested, revised, discarded and implemented in hours and days. Our world now operates at the speed of thought.

11 Cultural Marketing Arguments for Constructing a Viral, 1st Century Religion

If sensible, skilled marketing teams had been retained to design a world-class religion in 1st century Palestine, certain recommendations would certainly have guided the development of the Christian faith.  This is a sample of the brand development report we would expect to see.  It’s all quite reasonable, but maybe it’s good that the Lord didn’t consult this team first.

Ten Ways That God “Speaks,” Part 1

The Lord uses ten notable methods to communicate with His people, and we are wise to learn them all.  We become increasingly mature as we “allow” God to speak on His terms, without demanding that He communicate in the ways we understand best.  Admittedly, some of His methods are dramatic, but seldom used, while others are quieter and used more frequently.  For example, it’s not often that we receive an angelic visitation, but Zacharias certainly did.  Let’s recall the prophetic words spoken to him by the mighty archangel Gabriel:
